Pediatric Dentist / Orthodontist
A Utah upbringing
Born in Logan and raised in North Logan during its farming days, Dr. Barney worked the fields before attending North Cache Junior High. His family later moved to Willard, where he worked in the fruit orchards. He graduated from Box Elder High School, where he was active in music and track.
Training & service
Dr. Barney earned his dental degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, completing his pediatric dentistry residency at the same school. He then served three years in the U.S. Navy as a pediatric dentist at the Naval Air Station in Rota, Spain. After his service, he completed a residency in orthodontics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, earning a certificate and Master’s degree.
Decades in the Salt Lake Valley
Dr. Barney has been caring for kids in the Salt Lake Valley since 1994, bringing decades of experience and a steady, familiar presence to families throughout the community.
Family
Dr. Barney is married to Chris Adams, and they have four children: Megan, Adam, Chelsea, and Timothy.
An unconventional path to pediatric dentistry
Dr. Drew’s path here wasn’t a straight line. After graduate work in Florence, Italy studying the Italian healthcare system, and a Master’s in Healthcare Administration from the University of Michigan, he spent 10 years in hospital leadership roles at Mayo Clinic, UCLA Health, and Primary Children’s Hospital. It was at Primary Children’s that he found his true calling, kicking off an eight-year journey to become a pediatric dentist.
Training
Dr. Drew earned his DDS from the University of Utah and completed his pediatric residency at Primary Children’s Hospital, serving as Chief Resident. Following residency he practiced in Southern California before returning to Utah and joining Dr. Barney. He’s a recipient of the Pierre Fauchard Academy Award and belongs to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Dental Association.
Family & fun facts
Dr. Drew is a proud dad of three daughters, and understands kids — and parenting — firsthand. Outside the office, he’s always outdoors, whether that’s the beach or the mountains. His family loves hiking, biking, surfing, and skiing together, and winding down with an episode of Bluey before bed. His kids have officially voted him “Best Storyteller,” and he’s always up for a backyard zipline ride. He’s also a big fan of all things Italian, from a good Carbonara pasta to nocciola gelato, from Roman history to Renaissance art.
